Sculling

I rowed out to East Head today with the Dinghy Cruising Association, among whom was Cliff in his Wayfarer. He has made a very smart yuloh for sculling, but hasn't managed to get the technique quite right yet especially as he was sculling against both wind and current. Look at the mast - he is going slowly but surely backwards.

From what I can see the beaver-tail shape of that instrument should have an edge instead of the flat of the blade toward the stern, similar to the "Hobie" pedal drive, where the fins are in line with the keel.

A longer handle and a longer blade might also help. Getting two hands on the handle might help the process here. This rig seems to require too much athwartship action to be very useful or efficient.
